  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Open Kempe's Engineers' Yearbook at the materials data pages
  3. Measure the size and shape of the rod so as to obtain volume
  4. Multiply by the density in the materials data pages of the aforementioned publication

Option 2:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain an off-cut of the same material of which the weight is wanted
  3. Weigh the off-cut and record
  4. Multiply the recorded weight by the ratio of the length of the unknown weight material to the length of the offcut.

Option 3:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain 1mm-squared paper and a pencil
  3. Place the paper over the end of the rod and obtain a rubbing of the end, using the pencil
  4. Count the rubbed-in squares on the impression of the rod on the paper so as to obtain cross-section area
  5. Multiply by the length of the rod, so as to obtain volume
  6. Go to #1↑ item 4

Option 4:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain the cross-sectional area from the manufacturer's published information about the rod
  3. Multiply by the length so as to obtain volume
  4. Go to #1↑ item 4

Option 5:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain manufacturer's data sheet about the rod
  3. Multiply the published weight-per-unit-length by the length of the rod of unknown weight

Option 6:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain weighing device suitable for the size of the rod of unknown weight
  3. Tare the weighing device to zero
  4. Place the said rod on scales
  5. Read the weight of the rod from the display on the weighing device

Option 7:

  1. Turn off Caps Lock
  2. Obtain a water tank sufficient to receive the rod of unknown weight fully submerged
  3. Fill the tank to the brim
  4. Immerse the rod in the tank
  5. Collect the displaced water and measure the volume
  6. Go to #1↑ item 4

In #7 and #8, I'd advise the OP not to swim in the tanks while performing these tests.

Oh yes. TURN OFF CAPS LOCK!!

"What's a copper?"

Two pence, I think. We need to wait for a friend from across the pond for a final.

Or, the old standby answer... About 3-1/2 pounds.

It's a UK-based non-derogatory colloquialism for a Police Officer.

Psssst.

Mohana, it is probably a good idea to turn off the caps lock.

Oh, and your friend PWSlack has given you the correct answers.

HOW TO CALCULATE WEIGHT IN MS ROD AND COPPER?

With all due respect to the eminent posters, they didn't read the question properly...

First you get into the MS ROD. Then the rod gets into this nosey copper who is doing his beat and gets curious about this MS ROD which is doing St Vitus dance (since you are in it now). And ends up with the rod in his tummy. Now you calculate the weight.

OK, that takes care of the morning blues.

Re: Weight Calculation

1/2" copper rod = .97lb per ft.... 1/2" steel rod is a little bit less.... @.667 lbs per ft...

Diameter in inches squared x 2.67 = lbs. per foot for steel rod

Square of diameter X 9.42 X density of alloy = weight per lineal foot in pounds.for copper

copper typical density .323

density in lbs per cu in
