1) submit application to a grade school

2) attend grade school

3) submit application to a middle school

...passing all subjects with higher than average marks is highly suggested...

A good place to start would be GlobalSpec's DC Motor Selection Guide.

There are many types of motors on the market. Just for fun, you might want to search for the simplest motor and begin with that. I think YouTube has some interesting videos on the subject.

A motor that will run on AC or DC is called a universal motor, but it is not brushless. The term brushless will probably most likely mean that the rotating component is a permanent magnet. But if you apply DC to that type of design, it will align its magnetic rotor to the magnetic field of the DC coil and stop.

The wattage you mentioned is only part of what will need to be considered. If you find an old motor and take it apart, I think you will likely reconsider your quest for knowledge as you will realize that there are many pieces of stamped sheet metal making up the form upon which the coils are formed. It may be well beyond your capacity due to the tooling requirements. If you take one apart, I think you will see what I mean.

Get the availability of materials in market for your requirements.(stampings & magnets)

Then decide the size of motor as for your application. (Length and Diameter)

Do some basic calculations (current, voltage, power, turns etc.)

Do calculations until you get some good results. There are many books available for design of ac and dc motors. You have to read them.
