How Do I Send a Cactus Garden (About 6" in Diameter) in the Mail?

04/23/2012 10:31 AM

I will be sending the cactus garden from Los Angeles , California, U.S.A. to Texas, U.S.A. It will be about 6 or 7 inches tall. Thank you very much for your time & consideration. The main thing is that cactus need air-it has to breathe. The other issue is that I will be decorating it wilh colorful stones & seashells & miniature figures on top. So I need to figure out some type of water soluable spray on glue to spray on top, so that the stones, seashells, & miniatures don't fall out during handling & shipping. I am working on the water soluable spray thanks to the answers I found to that on this site "The Engineer"s Place". Thank you. The 1st person to have a doable answer for this question will get a free cactus garden from me. I think the water soluable spray will be an excellent idea, even for the gardens I am keeping for myself or giving to near by friends & relatives, because I keep knocking them over, & eveything keeps falling out. Yesterday, I saw some cactus gardens for sale with moss on top. If worse comes to worse, & the glue does not work, I could put a sheet of moss that you can buy at JoAnn's on top (cutting holes out for the cactus). Then when they get it they can remove the moss.

Your post sort of ambles about. I have a few thoughts...

"... some type of water soluable spray on glue to spray on top..." If you get some overspray on the cactus plant itself, this will undoubtedly be bad.

"...so that the stones, seashells, & miniatures don't fall out during handling & shipping." How about some hot glue, and a semi-rigid permeable mat. Glue the shiny beads to the mat (which has previously been trimmed for diameter, and trimmed to clear the plant), ship separately, and the recipient can install the decorated mat at the destination. Or, place the decorated mat on the cactus plant, add the mentioned moss as a shipping stabilizer to be removed at the destination.

Or have I completely misunderstood your question?

Hi. Excellent answer. You understood perfectly. You are RIGHT. I do sort of amble about. And that is how I talk also. It drives people crazy. I must work on trying to overcome this BAD habit. Any hints?

A sticky thread from Plantswap.net

  • Mail plants bare root if possible to minimize spread of soil born diseases. Make sure plants being mailed are healthy, free of insect or disease problems.
  • Package plants firmly to avoid damage from crushing enroute. Choosing the right sized and shaped box is important.
  • Use lightweight packing materials, e.g. newspaper,. noodles, bubble wrap, plastic grocery bags, to lighten shipping weight.but secure contents.
  • Mail plants by the fastest economical means available such as USPS priority mail (2-3 day delivery), or UPS ground if delivery can be guaranteed in 3 days or less. The point of shipping and destination will affect delivery times. The quicker the trip, the better condition upon arrival.
  • How to pack plants depends on their type: See tips below.

Cacti and Succulents: bare root, wrapped in newspaper

From me -- If you plan wrapping the roots/plant with newspaper, I would first wrap the roots with a semi-moist paper towel.

Cut an X pattern out of piece of cardboard and place the pot in the middle, raise the ends up surrounding the pot, tape them in place, hot melt glue cardboard X to cardboard in bottom of box...cover the top of planter opening with plastic with a hole to let plant through, tape in place securely...Cover plant with plastic, tape in place, poke holes for air....then tape everything to box interior bottom...Be sure to include instructions for unpacking....If you are using fragile pot, be sure to add layers of cardboard to bottom of box by hot melt glue...Good Luck, be sure to check that these species are allowed to be shipped to and from your selected locations....

I would have thought you to support the importation of living cacti into Texas.

Hi I value your opinion. It is important. If we all thought the same way everything would be boring. Thank you very much. Nancy

Hi. Now that I have finally thought about it, your comment is 100% on the mark. If I had said I was shipping to North Dakata, your answer probably would have been entirely different. I have only been to Texas once, & the only thing I remember about it is that a cattle truck caught fire, & the driver had to let all the cows out & they were running all over the countryside. My husband tried to help the driver, while my mother & I waited in the car. Terrifying. No person & no animal was injured. The driver remained extremely calm, as though he did this every day. The cattle were panicked.

I'm sure they must have more cactus than they need in Texas, so why would anybody in Texas want a cactus garden? Nancy

Hi Nancy. It's good to have you amongst us. Welcome.

We here at CR4 are more or less chums, and it is common for a little bantering to go on within a thread. My comment is directed at member Rorschach. He lives it TX, and I was just kidding him a little bit... in fact, he might want to order a few of your cactus gardens... or maybe not. He did say that there are already plenty of them.

So stick around if you feel like it, you're already one of the gang.

"... i will ask about 20 guys & i think 1 of them will know." Nancy, it is not possible for any group of people on the planet to know more than we do about breaking up a cast iron bathtub.

My very best wishes for you... we want to visit with you, not about you. We await your posting of these images of items unknown.

Your friend at CR4,

Doorman

Best of luck on the surgery. During recoup time take a glance at the Bath breaking thread on CR4. I doubt you can cover it all before you are done with recovery.

Bob, I have the unhappy chore of advising you of the demise of the BBT.

Gone. Dunzo. Over. Discussion closed by admin. Beyond closed, the thread itself has been removed from user view.

Is there a national day of mourning? Have the govt. offices shut down. Are the banks closed?

I am going to have to get my black suit pressed?

I had to bail on it a while ago. It was just too hard to get anything else done.

RIP BBT. You were one of a kind. Long live your fame.
