Upgrading a Gen.set on a Pleasure Boat

04/28/2012 1:37 AM

Hi, guys. Need to replace complete assembly an existing gen.set on board a boat. My brother in law got hold of it thru some business trade. Problem is the gen.set a total write off. We only manage to get the name of the maker 'WESTERBEKE' and its power 14Kw / 50Hz. (still looking best quote, can find any Westerbeke around here)

thinking to upgrade it bigger power, We asked around somehow its not as simple as we think. Somebody told us that the MSB@ mains switch board need upgrade too should we decide to upgrade. Before we call some pros would be best if we know what he be talking abt and why.

Thanks.

You (or someone) will need to examine the existing MSB to see how many amps it can handle. If the new genset puts out more amps than that, then the MSB needs also to be upgraded, and probably the wiring from the genset to the MSB as well.

Kramarat, you have me beat, A boat is nothing but a whole in the water that you pour money into.

The brand of powerplant you have is a reliable unit if its worth restoring.

Now there's a kick in the ass. You live in Bahama? I didn't know you guys had computers up there. Long story, short...................we probably know people in common. Shoot me a PM if you want. I'll be spending some time up there this summer..................................long as mamma gets the money together for the pool chemicals.

Hi... Some questions. What are your boat's size / type and its electrical power requirements? How fancy or utilitarian does the whole installation need to be? Does the GenSet have to be automatic? What space is available, (height-width-depth), and what sort mounting frames or floors are there? Noise, vibration levels and the weight, (keeping boat on even keel), access to the GenSet's location for removal and re-installation and lastly, expense justifications are all considerations.
