Midnight to early AM may suggest the lowest point on the temperature gradient has some effect. the time may also indicate early morning load switching/balancing by customers and your utility to meet new working day loads. Auto reclose (single event?) should agree with minor surging...is the recloser within maintenance specs?

Have the transient characteristics been evaluated up and downstream from the recloser? Can the event location be further isolated by time (nn km distances) on either side of the recloser?

I am assuming since these are 132kV lines that trees are not the problem of your intermittent phase to ground faults.

Do you have lightning protection or any other devices that are connected phase to ground on your line that could be responsible?

How much (if any) of your 132kV lines are run underground?

Damn...good catch on the line height...and likely lack of height...that's forward thinking.

If they were buried that would explain the OP's original statement of no birds.

I had in the back of my mind more questions about protection and grounding, but I don't like the 20 questions posts.
