Dear sir,

Please confirm my doubt That the suction pressure of condensate extraction pump of a steam turbine is positive or negative pressure.

Well, what happens in the condenser?

Dear sir,

condenser pressure is negative (-0.9kg/cm2) and why the pumps are errected in sump .

Thanking you,

With regards.

OK. Well, that answers the originally-posted question.

Because of the low pressure, the pump suction needs to be as short as practicable. Immersing the pumps in the sump itself is about as short a suction as any designer is likely to achieve. The need for a short suction line arises as an attempt to prevent the liquid from boiling at the pumps' inlets and the effects of cavitation occurring on the pumps' impellers. Cavitation in any pump will shorten the life of the impeller appreciably.

There is a good article on cavitation in Wikipedia.

I'll confirm that you appear to have a doubt.

Which do you doubt?

What do you think?
