On line HI POT tester

05/10/2007 8:00 AM

I am working in technical department with a FMCG manufacturing unit. Here we manufacture electrical heater type of product. This product is sold in market as consumer goods which comes under daily usage of customers (public).

Since the above said product works in electrical power, in our manufacturing unit at production line I would like to put an on line HI POT tester through which the product can be tested in HIGH POTENTIAL before dispatching to market as finished product. Can anyone suggest me, whoom(Supplier or consultant or anyother source) I must approach to get this on line HI POT tester.

Note: We are already having one portable type HI POT tester. But it cannot be used in on line.

Waiting for your valuable reply,

Regards,

Vinod.P,

India.

Is this produce a heater coil of some type, or an actual, plug-in, finished consumer product?

Dear Mr Jake,

This is a plug in type finished consumer product. The heating element assembled inside is a ceramic disc (resistor) & not heating coil.

Note:When the end user (customer) plug in the heater it must be ensured he/she will not get electric shock due to leakege current from body. To ensure this I wish to check it in on line during manufacturing stage itself to avoid customer complaints from market. It is not compulsory, you suggest me suppliers or consultants. If possible you suggest me some alternate methods which can be developed/fabricated inhouse.

Vinod,

There are several different types of Hy-Pot that are small and can be used on the line. My concern is that the Hy-Pot is a destructive test, it breaks down the insulation. I had an application where UL required a Hy-Pot test, do to the nature of the assembly we did the test before we inserted the heater, then again at final. Come to find out our supplier was doing a Hy-Pot and between the three tests, we did indeed destroy the insulation and the Hy-Pot would fail at final and cause us to do a very expensive re-work.

My suggestion is to only test once, train your people to be afraid, be very afraid, the Hy-Pot will put a high voltage through the ungrounded heater and should they touch the unit during the test, they could die. No, really, they could die.

If you still need a hy-pot tester, contact FLUKE company, they make a nice one about the size of a lunch box and can be used on the shop floor.

Good luck

Laby,

Thanks to your mail on HI POT. As mentioned by you, we must take much safety precautions to perform this test & we will do it definitely. Any way we will perform this test once only. To avoid the damage of destroy of heater due to insulation failure, it is possible to avoid the same by tuning the value of HIGH POTENTIAL (Voltage) required to a safe range.

But my main problem is, iam searching for an on line testing device which I can install in my heater production line & testing will be performed automatically. The HI-POT tester already we are having is not on line tester.

Can you say me, the HI-POT tester by FLUKE company said by you, is whether an on line testing device or lab testing device.

If your aim is to get authorization to stamp your product UL ΠISO---- then approach them and they will tell you all about procedures and hardware needed by them to t enable you pass these tests -and authorize you to stamp their sacred names on your product.

If it is your Conscience/PR worry ,then routinely offer a 3rd earth wire to body. Put a CT on 3rd wire return path to ground-while on 1 or both of the 2 power in wires you put 300% rated input voltage. CT output should be set to Alarm,Leak limit,Trip.

Rest is simple.

Dear Mukul,

First of all thanks for your mail.

My aim is not to get authorization to stamp. I want to check the actual quality of product at on line production before dispatching it to market. So I will try once try with your 2nd seggestion providing 3rd wire & CT.

Note 1: But in this I may face a problem because the enclosure of my heater product is of plastic & I want to check, after assembling the heater mistakenly if any wire from inside touches the plastic body or any wire strands strucks in between joints of upper & lower plastic cover which will not be easily visible.

Note 2: Can u send me ur contact no. I think, I will be able to find a solution for my problem through your valuable support.

Regards,

Vinod

Note 1: If the Plastic body can stand years of use--Testing 5 Seconds won't harm. Judge the Leak path signal with alertness. Anybody can be taught in 5 Minutes.
