Electrical Supply Problem

05/07/2012 2:58 AM

Dear team,

I'm saran from bangalore working as technical engineer.

I'm facing a problem in power supply given to a server rack.

The server consist of two source of input with two different power distribution unit as usual we connected both the power cable of the power distribution unit in a single socket supply.

After we turned on the supply we are getting 230 V in one power distribution unit.

The other unit shows P-N =86 Volt N-E = 197 Volt P-E = 230 Volt

What may be the problem? I checked the power distribution unit specification it 's input is 240 Volt 30 Amps

Please help me with this.

Come on Lyn, honestly?, that is like having to cite 'imitation is the kindest form of flattery' every time you said it.

The second power supply is faulty.

Somewhere within the power supply the Neutral wire has come loose.

Remove and repair or replace the faulty power supply before it does more damage or hurts someone if the loose wire moves and touches the chassis of the power supply and or server.

Regards,
Sapper

Ah. i know what you mean. The 'sales engineer' who came to sell computers to my department had to call his 'technical engineer' when he was asked about some detailed questions.

Reminds of an old Indian story : In a village, it so happened that all but one of the children born over a short time were girls. The lone boy grew up playing girl games with his contemporaries. As is normal in our villages, all the menfolk would go to the fields during the day. One day a snake crawled into the village square. All the women ran away, shouting "Call the men!!!". In this panic, even the young boy ran along with everyone else, shouting "Call the men !". Sales engineers indeed !

saran, I would recommend to check each PDU while isolating the other.

If all phase and line voltages of both PDUs are similar then compare frequency of both and check for accidental phase change.

In my opinion its most likely the phase change.
