Specific Ammeter

05/08/2012 3:44 AM

Dear sir,

i want an ammeter in which i can see only milli ampere even if the current is in 2 or 3 or maybe 10 ampere but i want to see that in milli ampere

like suppose if current passing through a motor is 5 ampere i want to see that in milli ampere and that would be 5000 milli ampere

ok i know its sound easy but most of the multi meter if current go up from milli ampere to ampere the multi meter start showing that in ampere automatically.and if you want to see that same figure in mili ampere they wont let you see

hope you understand my problem

please give advice

How accurate is it supposed to be? One part in 5000 is a tall order, and what relevance is it to the intended use with a motor, where the line voltage and current fluctuate with changes in the load?

I just want a multimeter that if i try to measure current of a 3 phase motor it will show me in milli ampere even if the current of that motor is 4 ampere or 5 or up to 10 and even if varries up to 2 ampere

thanks

I second #6. Can't you multiply by 1000 in your head?

Normally 4 digit or 5 digit multimeter with milli ampere range can read it . If you set the multimeter in milli ampere range and then measure the ampere it shows in milli ampere . And if the current goes above scale/range it will show error till you change the range of multimeter.

I understand your need, but asking for a thousandth of an ampere when you are in a couple of amperes may not really make much difference in your calculations. But try FLUKE. They must have such a line that meets your exact specs.

A mA in 10 A scale is 0.01%. On DC it's (relatively) easy, but if you want to get that accurate on AC, it WILL COST. If you don't want the accuracy, but just want the resolution for comparing currents and their changes, it's a whole different thing and cost is orders of magnitude lower. A 4 1/2 digit AC ammeter will do fine. Which one is it? S.M.

Buy a clamp meter, there are many on the market.

Typically a GOOD digital meter will have 2% accruacy in current measurement, so that level of granularity is going to be utterly meaningless. A meter that accurate will likely cost $10,000.00+

Loads are rarely very steady on motors. What sense it would make seeing 5A current changing, for instance, from 4978 to 5037 in milliseconds with the eye not able to catch any actual instant reading ?
