Which is better - a) to use the search function to see if my question has already been discussed, or b) to ask a question which has been recently discussed ad nauseum on this very forum?

Does a professor repeatedly pose these questions, or is this water cooler conversation?

It depends which country the observer is in. One will not find 60Hz across Europe and one will not find 50Hz across the American continents.

One will find 162/3Hz across some of the railways of Switzerland....

Whomever has voted PWSlack's response as off topic is an ignoramus, it is EXACTLY on topic, and relevant. There is no meaningful qualitative response to the OPs question. "Better" implies there is a choice. If you have no choice, the qualitative analysis is moot before you even begin.

Ignoramus, eh? You do have a choice - if you think 60 is better, move to NA. If you think 50 is better, move elsewhere. Have to agree with your last statement, though. Besides, what if DC (or 42Hz) is best ?

Actually, I gave him/her the off topic in protest for an earnest answer to the question which won't go away.

i don't know a damn thing about electrical engineering. 60 hz may be more practical because generators and motors have winding that have three or multiples of three windings. someone else will have to clarify the different phasess
