thickness of a plate

05/10/2007 2:42 PM

Hi All,

If we have steel platform with 6' wide and 12' long and subject to the static load of 2500lbs distributed evenly over 8'. What is the thickness of that plate to withstand that distributed load?

The correct answer is :

That depends.

Are you planing on having any support beams under the steel? Cross members?

If you don't the steel plate will not be able to support it's self.

Let's say YES! How about I-beams every 16" running the 6' side. Let's make it easy and say the I beans you selected are 4" wide at the top. The steel plate should be less then 1/2", anything more will be overkill as the support come from the I-beams, not the plate.

If you have that, then the load carrying cap. is about 150# PSF. or the structure will hold about 10,800 lbs.
