Temperature Sensor Insertin for Natural Gas

I have to select insertion length of temperature sensor (RTD) for measurement of temperature to be used for flow computer for flow measurement of natural gas for custody transfer. What is recommended insertion length in pipe for temperature measurement of flowing gas temperature. Is there any standard such as AGA or API that gives guideline for insertion length of RTD in line. Generally recommendation is that tip of sensor goes to center of pipe. Also I have read somewhere that if we divide pipe dia in three sections then tip of sensor should be any where in the middle section. But I need the reference of some standard, which gives recommendation on this.

I don't know about regulations and such but the RTD manufacturer will tell you how far to insert their product.

I'd put one in the center and one just in from the ID of the pipe and average the two readings.

Your most constant flow will be in the center of the pipe so long as it is not disturbed by bends etc,

However the temperature at the begining of your pipe will be higher than at the end. So if you are using temperature to give you flow it will have to be calibrated for various flows into a given volume and a compensation value entered in to your computer program.

probe should be as close as possible to the inlet side of the flow meter , but not so close as to disturb the flow by creating turbulence , and in the center of the pipe.

for what its worth ... when one is used with other products such as diesel and there is an air eliminator before the flow meter then the probe should be after the air eliminator and before the flow meter.

ps , most flow computers have software that calculates change on density and volume based on temperature and compensates with the measured volume that is pumped

volume pumped and temperature measured are usually included in the data output ( or on the printed docket )

The general rule of thumb used to be that a temperature element should be inserted between 2/3 and 3/4 way into the pipe, that way the element is exposed to most temperatures inside the pipe.

For fiscal measurement the temp element should be as close as possible to the flow meter to give the best temperature reading.

This is general rule of thumb. But is there any standard like AGA, API or any other standard, which mentions this rule?
