Wicking Material for Fluid Transfer on a Metal Shaft

05/14/2012 3:46 PM

Hello,

I have an adhesive primer that gets applied to a metal shaft. I am looking for a robust wicking material to transfer the primer from a pot to the shaft. We currently use cotton that we hand roll and fit through a tube to make a wick. This works well for fluid transfer but as people are different the wicks are not always consistent in hardness or shape. I have pursued felt wicks but have had no luck in finding a supplier that is able to produce the small consistent tip I need. The material must be able to be shaped down to a minimum 0.060" thickness in some cases but the overall thickness can be up to 0.500" if needed. I don't necessarily care of the shape just that it is consistent. I am looking for consistency in fluid transfer and robustness of the 0.060" thickness as I don't want it to "mushroom" out to say 0.080" or something; eventual breakdown is acceptable as replacement wicks are current practice.

I have very limited experience with wicking and have pursued felt wicks but have had no luck in finding a supplier that is able to produce the small consistent tip I need.

Any advice and or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

BJ

Wicks?

Not enough information.

By hand? machine? continuous? strips? Why is the .060 important?

Pretend you are explaining the process to someone who isn't too intelligent. Make it in simple steps that let the simple man understand the importance of the wick.

Go.

sorry I will do my best to explain some more aspects.

Wicks = a strip of porous material used to transfer a fluid from a pot up through the material thorugh capillary action. Think of an oil lamp, the wick absorbs the oil from the pot and the capillary aciton brings it to the opposite surface of the wick where it can be lit on fire.

The applicaiton of "priming" (applying the fluid to the shaft) will be done by hand on a fixture. The shaft is layed across a fixture with several "wicks" spaced in position. If I could choose I would like to have the wicks cut to size, approximatly 1.25" long by 0.25" diameter with a 0.060" tip. I am able to modify the design at this point if needed but this is a starting point.

The 0.060" is actually a first estimate on the appropriate sizes I will need. I know I will need atleast 3 different tip sizes ranging from around 0.060" up to 0.150" thickness. The size is important as the adhesive primer may only be applied to a small specific area of the shaft otherwise excess portions of material may bond to the primer on the shaft and the part is rejected.

So a run through in simple steps.

1) We have a series of shafts that get another material bonded to them.

2) We use an adhesive primer to bond the material

3) The primer is applied in specific areas of the shaft based on a fixture designed per shaft.

4) Currently the primer is applied by cotton wicks. Cotton is rolled into a rope and pushed into a holder and then fastened to the priming fixture.

5) The shafts are then placed on a fixture with the wicks staitoned in specific positions

6) The shaft is manually rotated on the fixture to apply 360° coverage of the primer in the specific areas the wicks are present.

7) After the shafts are primed we then bond another material to the shafts.

I hope I have helped to explain the applicaiton futher.

Thank you for the other respones I will review the materials suggested. I did think of the blank pen/marker tips. I was going to purchase some from McMaster-Carr and give those a trial.

Worsted wool is the wicking material of preference in machines like this:

Welcome to the forum bjiii31. We do need more detail, and you will probably get some good answers, but without any more info I would be asking did you think about a eurethane micro transfer roller?

I have had good results by modifying marking pen tips to wick standard inks. They can be cut into any desired shape with a sharp tool. I believe they are made from felt. If the cutting tool is very sharp, the felt cuts cleanly and accurately.

Felt Pen tips are called Nibs and they may work.
