Gas Powered Refrigerator

05/15/2012 4:07 AM

Hi I am a Plumber/gas fitter, with a small task - A client/friend of mine, has asked me to re jet his really old Natural gas Electrolux upright fridge to an LPG powered one. The only compliance plate it has is of little use, except to show the BTU of 2000 per hour, my question to all of the knowledgable people out there is- the Natural gas jet size is approximately .75mm & I need to know the LP Gas/Propane jet size to achieve the 200 BTU's

Thanx in advance

Paul

Thanks for a reason to venture back to that trusty student copy of the Chemical Rubber Handbook (or a reasonable facsimile thereof).

Warum einfach, wenn es kann so schön kompliziert sein?

Why simple, when it can be so beautifully complicated?

Propane jet will be less than half the size with more pressure required...

Your local gas authority should have a conversion chart/table somewhere. Don't forget, it may not just be a case of putting smaller jets in place, some of these units had the main control valve with a built in regulator. Using standard household LPG supply pressure (2.75Kpa) you will not need a regulator. check the valves/components built in. If you cannot get parts any more, you should be able to get blank pilot spuds, blank injector jets from a plumbing suppliers. You will then need a set of number drills and a number drill table to match the conversion table (mentioned above).

Hope this info helps, remember, over gassing these old fridges can do more harm than good, it is very important to get it right first time.

Cheers

I found good looking hits under:

Electrolux gas refrigerator conversion kits

and

Electrolux Vintage gas refrigerators

The info you are seeking ought to be there.

If they are properly maintained, those old Servel refrigerators have a very long useful life. There are companies like this one that still offer repair and replacement parts. Evidently both the orifice (or orifices, if this unit has a separate pilot) and the turbulator need to be replaced at the time of the NG-to-LPG conversion.

Your LPG supplier can probably refer you to a local company that sells parts and services for these venerable boxes. If your customer has been using this refrigerator for a while he may already know about little details like keeping the flue clean to avoid a fatal encounter with Carbon Monoxide. If not, remind him. Good luck.

you can purchase a pre-60's SERVEL service manual here. It may have more specific info on your unit.
