ASME Section VIII DIV 1 - UG 27 Vs Mandatory Appendix-1

05/21/2012 8:13 PM

IN UG 27 - Formula given for thickness calculation with internal pressure where input we need is internal diameter of the vessel. Which is generally available.

In Mandatory appendix 1, formula given for thickness calculation with internal pressure but in terms of outside diameter.

What is the purpose of formula given in Appendix -1 (ie formula in terms of outside diameter) Where one can apply this formula? As generally inputs are internal diameter. How one can first decide outside diameter if thickness is unknown?

If your ID is fixed you can use the formula in UG 27. If the OD is fixed (example pipe vessels) you can use formula given in appendix 1

  • When standard pipe is to be used for shell, OD is known. Wall Thickness from Schedule table can be available. The 12.5% under tolerance on thickness to be deducted to arrive at "Ta". This thickness "Ta" can be used in formula for designing on OD basis. The resultant allowable pressure must exeed the Design Pressure. To go on trying the thickness to achieve design pressure. However corrosin allowance, if applicable, to be considered.
