Current Transformer Question

05/27/2012 12:56 AM

My system defines 500/1A CT. Actual requirment is 400/1A. Can I use 500/1A in place of 400/1A CT. Please Help.

It is not clear what you mean by 'actual requirement' and 'system definition'. Well, assuming that you mean that the actual current is 400A, (so that you want to use a 400/1 CT), are you sure that the meters, relays or whatever that draw current from the secondary are not designed for 0.8A rather than 1A? If you are sure, then you should ask the person who specified 500/1A as to why he/she did so. i don't think it is ok to take a decision on your own.

Make sure the CT ratio matches the meter's scale ratio.

Just put a piece of tape on the meter and write "X .8"

Should do the trick.

Probably, if you can electronically scale the 1A signal for a 0-400A range and keep the required CT resolution and accuracy.
