Re: machining cone profile in machinig center material copper

Really depends on what machining center you have! can the piece be held in a chuck and then turned using a canned cycle? its easy to set the cone profile in the canned cycle, (read the instruction manual for the language of machine) with copper, when you rough out the cone, be careful to get the feeds and speeds right, and the depth of cut right, copper tends to grab tools otherwise!

What programming software are you using, or are you going to program it manually with a pencil and calculator? What VMC are you using? How big is the cone? Is it hollow? How are yougoing to holdon to it? This is really an easy task but you must supply specific information.

Considering some of the other responses you should probably register on CR4 not just as a guest so we know who we are helping.

But why on VMC. If this can be done on CNC lathe with ease.or even on simple good lathe.

There could be several reasons to machine a round part on a mill. There could be other features that have to be milled that may need to blend with the conical shape, there could be holding issues that might be easier to deal with on a mill, or there could be vibration issues on a turned part that can be overcome by milling. I once made an aluminum part about the size and shape of a large punch bowl with milled scallops on the inside with an undercut and an .080 wall thickness. The customer had tried to make it on a CNC lathe and failed.

Then there is the possibility that all he has is a VMC. When the only tool you have is a hammer then every job starts to look like a nail.

What type of protective head gear? The type that is usually made from aluminum foil, and protects against alien brainwashing transmissions?

Calculate the angle of the cone. Grind an endmill to that angle. Manually program it with overlapping circular cuts. If you are real good, program it to cut a spiral.
