What Does Motor Frame Size Tell Us?

05/12/2007 9:19 AM

What detail can we find from the motor frame size (other than motor shaft diameter from base)? It applies to both AC and DC motors.

The motor frame size defines mounting hole centers, mounting hole size, distance from the mounting face to the center of the shaft, distance from the outer mounting holes to the shaft base, shaft length and diameter, and shaft keyway dimensions.

Frame Size saves us from Chaos in producing Induction Electric Motor Stampings.

Due to fixing of sizes - say 65,80,90,120>>>> we can readily buy these and package/wind/pot/cast-the- cage and sell motors ofnearly same ratings. Dia of Shaft, keyway, feet/flange, holes are now standardized . If Motor Maker 305's failed-buy frame 90L from maker #775.Will match.( If volt/Pole pair No same).

Even here there could be performance variations due to design details.

DC motors have different needs regarding windings .

Yet frame size can be standardized to benefit mounting.

The basic figure in frame size is distance in mm from underside of mounting feet (foot-mounted motor) to shaft centreline. Perhaps you were referring to this by "other than motor shaft diameter from base", but just in case. Ref to motor shaft diameter makes it unclear.

For the same power, motors with more poles have larger frame size.
