Insulator Question

06/04/2012 7:25 AM

Insulators have a rated specification in terms of KV. Is this a breakdown voltage of that insulator? If so how do we calculate the breakdown voltage of insulators for a dc system?

(Here i m concentrating on busbar insulators)

I have seen an equation for insulation test , which is

Vtest= 2*Vop + 1000

where V test = test voltage

Vop = Operational voltage

So, can Vtest be taken as Breakdown voltage?

I really don't understand what you expect to find at an engineering blog. Do you want us to teach you solid state conduction band theory in under 140 characters so it will fit on your I-Phone screen? Do you require a refresher of the meaning of the electron binding energies for the elements? You claim that this is for a buss bar installation where kilovolts will be present. Just by asking such a question it is obvious that you are not qualified to do this design work. If you are trying to become qualified to do this design work, open your textbook and read. We do not do homework here. We did our homework, now you should do yours. If you do not understand something in your readings, come back to us with what you do understand and at least an attempt at what you don't understand. I and many here will happily help those who show us that they are trying to understand our arcane disciplines.

Actually i m using a busbar for 48VDC , 900A for which i need an insulation sleeve. But when i checked out, i saw lots insulation ratings( dielectric strengths in KV), so could not find out how much do i require for my application, exactly. I only could find out the equation given in last post, for which i m getting 1.1KV. I know the rating should be above 48V, but what should be its minimum rating, i couldn't find out..
