Computer Keyboard Quits Responding

06/07/2012 10:09 PM

Now and then, seems to be random, commands from the keyboard are ignored--it quits responding. The mouse still works OK. The only way I have discovered to get the keyboard back is a soft boot using the button on the tower. Anybody have an idea of what is happening?

Thanks.

When was the last time you cleaned your keyboard or checked your keyboard cable for damage or loose connections?

Sometimes the operating system is not the problem (shockingly).

Test a new keyboard. Same trouble? How old is the keyboard? Is it infrared? I had problems with this. Cable? See other posts! Need more input!

Mine did the same the other day... After much head-scratching and going round in circles, I discovered the cause and cure.... Plug the USB connector in!!!!

I hang my head :-)

When it happened at my desk top computer I usually cleans the key board with soft cloth as recommended by the manufacturer and it works most of the time. In case if it not working I replace it.

My apple computer key board also stopped communicating. This was my fault. I dropped little tea on the key board and water in the tea killed my key board This is because of water and temperature.

If you are in the area of hot and humid and key board is old and at the edge this may happen or if you drop hot water, coffee or tea then sure irrespective of condition.

Which connector does your key board use USB or IBM? Keyboards are not high priced (you can even get good used one - borrow your buddies). The first thing would be to substitude another keyboard.

Hi there, Lehman57. Another question : is this a Bluetooth device? If yes, then sometimes you should check if it's "on the air", that is you should push a button on its bottom/back which is supposed to tell the computer to pay attention to it. I had such a combo, where the keyboard and the mouse were Bt, and got fed up with this ritual. Since then I only use microtransmitters and these do a very good job. I/You don't have to check if it gets any attention from the computer-it is right there when and where you need it.

No. Hardwired thru USB.

I liked Solar Eagle's suggestion about updating drivers. It appeared to be free, which is the right price for me as a retired person, but in the end they needed registration which cost $$.

The problem also hasn't happened again since then, which shows how random it is--or maybe that threatening it makes it go away!

USB cables go bad and have a random connection; especially after some one trips over the cord. (Grandchildern are hard on them too)!

Hi Lehman57 and all! I'm a "hardware" guy so my first shot was at the hardware. Checking/updating drivers is an excellent suggestion, but if speakin about USB watch out for some loose ties. A couple of years ago I had a printer which was connected to the front-panel USB on my computer. I was aware of the fact that I haven't checked the machine for quite a while, which includes vacuum-cleaning it for dust! So, with my peripheral I noticed a spark from the direction of the above connection, and the fuse of the house went out. I adjusted back the connection, turned on the fuse ... and the front panel went on fire. First of course I disconnected the whole bunch from the electricity, took the burning machine-front panel, made of plastic-to one of our two porches and since I couldn't estinguish the fire, I ripped off the front panel. So, please make sure You won't get such suprises and pay some attention to the hardware also!

Good day and good use of this marvelous machinery!

Here is a couple of other things to consider. Has your computer built up enough dust inside to cause it to get too hot? This could cause problems. Second, is your computer an Intel socket 1155 type? When they first came out, revision 1 of the motherboards had a problem with the onboard chips, so they were replaced. Revision 3 motherboards from ASUS have a problem with their USB ports, so they came out with revision 3.1, which finally fixed everything. If you have a revision 3.0 motherboard from ASUS, you may have this USB problem, and can get it replaced free from ASUS if you complain hard enough. Or you can buy an add-in card with USB ports, and separate your keyboard from the other USB devices.
