Pigging System Issue

06/08/2012 8:47 AM

Hello,
We currently have an HPS Pigging System installed in our plant for our cold blend soup line. The pig is being pushed perfectly in the forward direction at 50 psi, however when the pig is returning back to its homing station, it gets stuck at the metal detector crimp we have installed (at this place we have a decrease ID). We are also returning it back with 50 psi of pressure. Does anyone happen have a solution or direction on where we can go in resolving this issue? We think we might have an issue with the seal or one of the valves not being opening properly but we are unsure.

"at this place we have a decrease ID". This may explain the problem you are having if the pig hangs at this location.

Just a shot in the dark here, can you rotate the pig 180 degrees?

If so, see if the pig hangs going out and does not on the way back (opposite of the symptoms you have now).

To me that would indicate a difference in contour between the opposite ends of the pig.

My gut tells me the reduced ID at the "metal detector crimp" is the real problem though.

The pig is symmetric all around so I don't think it's a pig issue. It's like it does not have enough pressure to go forward so maybe its a hose ID issue or something else? Anyone want to chime in?

Two thoughts:

1. The pig might be "physically" symmetrical, but have some other "non-symmetric" charateristic.

2. The reduction in the metal detector ID might not be symetrical in both directions.

That's my best guess. Good luck in finding the answer.

Maybe go to a non-intrusive pig detector...could the problem be with the magnetic detector being attracted to the pig in this orientation....can you rotate the pig to test this possibility? are you sure this is a bi-directional pig? have you taken a pressure reading of pressurized portion of pipe when pig becomes stuck?

Normally pigs have only one way direction. I Don´t undertand what you say with "Returning back", WP

Was this pig designed to operate in this manner, i.e bidirectional?
