CD Changer Malfunction in '02 Cadillac Seville STS

06/11/2012 11:01 AM

The CD changer in my Caddy started malfunctioning recently. It is located in the console between the two front seats. It has a removable cartridge that holds 6 CD's. At first it wouldn't read the CD is slot 1, then slot 1 and 2, and so on. Now, it gives an error whenever I try to play a CD from the changer. It has a CD player in the dash radio, so it's not that big of a deal. But when I am on the road for hours at a stretch, I like to preload books on tape into the changer, so I don't have to deal wih switching them out, while navigating heavy traffic. Anyone have any ideas on this? By the way, there are no error codes coming up.

Try ejecting all the disks, shutting the system off with the car running, then back on and reload disks....worth a try....

Yes I would try cleaning it next....Something may have spilled in or debris may be obfuscating the laser...

Try running a CD lens cleaning disk through the player. These rarely fix this type of problem but they are such a low cost that they're worth the shot. Most likely the laser itself has died after ten years of use and needs to be replaced. This is not a consumer repairable part.

You don't want to know how complicated the whole "optical discs" technology is, and how many things can go wrong (actually do go wrong all the time and are corrected on the fly usually within msecs without listener to take notice) The only user-level actions is cleaning your CDs (lens cleaning, bias adjustments or laser changing are risky and special tools not available to average user are needed). But the symptoms you mention make me suspect the cartridge and casing condition. They are supposed to be made from heat warping resistant plastics but nothing really escapes aging. And if you feel brave, open-up and carefully clean the compartment. You won't believe the hair and dust you'll find in it. And there is always the (moving parts free) Mp3 technology to think about. (lol) S.M.

Cleaning has been (correctly) already suggested,

You can also find the two supply wires, one switched by the ignition and one permanent and pop them off for at least one day.

This sometimes fixes electronic equipment with a "bug" I have found...sometimes....it fixed my car CD player.

Or drop the negative off the battery for a day or so (No driving possible).

That's true, I've a computer that controls the gearbox on my van & every time it starts to mess about, I disconnect the batteries for a night & it reboots the system.
