Eliminating Power Lines

06/13/2012 1:26 AM

i recently posted a question asking members to chime in about the possibility of eliminating power lines. great posts.

is it possible to sent high voltage power by earthing both power and grounding by using different frequencies?

i'm obviously not an electrical engineer.

No no and thrice no.
Enough already with the power though the ether.
Transmit it as a flow of water, converted to electricity at the other end...it's just as sensible/practical.
If you don't desist I'll start asking endless Qs about send Tuna via soundwaves or some such.

So one cannot send it as tuna, then? How peculiar....

Enery can be beamed over in the form of fruit.
Bananas are particularly good for transmitting energy.
Melon/gravity systems and melon rubber band systems work well for kinetic energy transfer although I personally favour the arrow as an energy transfer medium (also available in small and large) .
The warterflow and transferrimost is perflaps the mostiwettifold solution.
Frequently moldulation is sheer folly... deary me

The answer is "sort of".

It is possible to create a transformer. That is a coil that converts an AC signal to a magnetic field, the field travels through space, another coil then converts the mag field back into an AC signal.

Different frequencies can travel different distances through different materials. This is all very well understood, and commonly used.

Unfortunately it's not efficient, can't transmit much power and doesn't work well over any sort of distance.

So it could be used to recharge a phone within a few cm or perhaps power a small LED within a few meters but not much else. If you want to send serious energy you'd need a narrow and directed beam (like a microwave beam).

There are many ways to transfer energy over distance one-way without wires - the Sun does it every day. High voltage transmission is our way of tranporting energy over distance efficiently butthis can not be done without wires. You could however build powerstations next to your household appliences so that the power only has a little way to go. e.g. Solar but not in any great level. Magnetic fields and microwaves are not electricity and distribution of energy in these forms would be harmful.
