According to Engineered Material Handling's Glossary of Terms:

Plugging: A control function which accomplishes braking by reversing the motor line voltage polarity or phase sequence.

Like most motors they don't like it when going full speed in one direction someone switches to the other with out coming to a stop. So they have circuitry that does it. Pulses to the motor braking the direction of travel until it stops. This is plugging.

Usually found of equipment where an operator has control of directional motion and speed. Fork lifts and cranes are a few.

So, "plugging" is another word for dynamic braking/holding.....

Why is it called "plugging" I wonder?
