SPD can be analogue to Pressure relief valve, It will open when pressure exceeds its limit. SPD will allow excess current to drain to earth when surge is there.

under normal condition it act as non conductive.

Very little, if the abbreviation MOV means 'motor-operated valve'.

Also means "Metal-Oxide Varistor," which is a type of Surge Protection Device.

SPD is a STANDARD PAPADUM DIAMETER and often associted with the SRC (standard rice consumption) and BCI ( butter chicken intake ). Whilst these are standards vary the common consensus is 1 x papadum to 1/8th cup rice to 1/16 butter chicken.

Varying this ratio is posssible but can often result in SPS (Sloppy Papadum Syndrome).

Construction and working pricinciple is usually from chic pea, lentil, black gram or potatoe, and are usually used to scoop propotional mixtures of rice and butter chicken ( refer above ) into ones mouth....:)

I commonly agree with you on the acronyms, but in this case the OP did indeed define SPD as Surge Protective Device, so your comments are NOT appropriate. Perhaps you did not read the title...

That is why I listed as off topic. As for as being appropriate I hardly think that is up to you to judge.

I believe that all these would be readily available on the internet & some simple searches & a little reading would get you the answers for your home work

Re: SPD (Surge Protective Device)

Let me try to explain in a few words:

1. indian standard of SPD's is IEC 61643-11/2011 version

and IEC 60364-4-443 and -5-534 for SPD installation rules

2. Construction of SPD's: different components are used

-MOV (Metal Oxyde Varistor)

-GDT (Gas Tube ) or Spark gap (aeral or encapsulated)

Several type of SPDs are existing :

- Type 1 (with very high current discharge -mainly based on spark Gap techno or more and more on big MOV able to drive the direct lightning current from the lightning rod and the earth cable), Type 1 is installed in the main board

-Type 2 (generaly used to drive the current from the electrical network to the earth(MOV or MOV +GDT are mainly used in this case). this one is installed on the mainboard ,

-Type 3 ( same using than Type 2 but this is an additional SPD installed as close as possible to the sensitive electrical equipment.

All SPD are installed in parrallel of the electrical network

If you want more details ,you can see this Wiki -EIG chapter dedicated to SPD technology, principles and installation rules for a safe installation ==> http://www.electrical-installation.org/enwiki/Protection_against_voltage_surges_in_LV
