Problem in Current Transformer

06/23/2012 10:17 AM

when we are conducting relay testing by giving primary injection test to the current transformer .thr relay is not operate & also the CT circuit does not show any current in primary as well as in secondary side what is the probable cause. is the secondary circuit open or the CT core has gone out of order .But when i check the secondary circuit it stood ok. is the cause of wrong wiring viz. changing of CT S1 & S2 connection or any other problem

If you have as such basic questions, I really don't think you should be working with CT's.

If the primary isn't conducting, there's the first place to look. Changing the secondary around isn't going to help.

When doing primary injection , the current is not dependent on the CT or secondary of CT. So there must be a problem with the current injection tester. You must be able to read the current injected on the tester. Also note that the primary current injected is much higher than what you normally inject with secondary current injection.

Also you must be specific while you are explaining a problem. The type of relay, settings, CTs, CT ratio and current injected must be clearly mentioned so that the problem can be analysed properly

Dear Sehdev,

Have you checked proper functioning of your Primary Injection test set? First check the above. If it is found O.K. then pl. check the primary circuit (continuity test ) of the CT.; you have not mention the type of the CT(i.e bar primary or wound primary)

Hope this may help you.

Hi there,

Put a short on your secondary circuit right at the CT....send current again and test with a clippon for some current.....if you get current then start looking for the fault in your secondary circuit..........if you get no current then your CT is damaged

Cheers

Mike
