Ding. Brownies are Done. (Cooked Motor)

Hello,

Check this out. Questions/discussion follow.

What is the goop that bubbled out of it onto the rotor and the winding wraps? I am assuming this gunk was a result of overheating and not the reason for the stall. By the way, it's a small 1HP 3PH motor that was actually phased for reverse when it was cooked, but the pump rotates in reverse and shouldn't have stalled it. The machine was sent from Europe and is dual rated for 50 or 60 Hz, specced OK at 380V for both frequencies (this was the voltage applied). Less torque at 60Hz is noted, but the replacement motor works great.

Looks like it was wrapped with some sort of tape...Actually the windings don't look that bad from here, the motor looks fairly new....

The "goop" just appears to be the cooked varnish of the motor windings, oozed out of the stator slots when it over heated.

Looks to me like it single-phased or had some other form of severe imbalance in current to the windings (2 of them) and whatever you had for protection didn't pick up the condition.

Similar to the example in this photo, but this is for a much larger motor of course.
