UPS Undervoltage Issues

06/26/2012 12:25 AM

Hi all,

I have a APC 650VA 400W ups. The battery needed replacement however the battery does not give any specs on it. The only data i could find regarding the battery is that it is 108VAh. I repalced the battery with a 12V 8Ah battery and let the battery get charged. Upon switching to back up i observed that the output delivered was 140 V instead of 220V. The UPS did not indicate any faults. What could be the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Thanks SolarEagle.

As you see the battery specs mention only 108 Volts-Amp-Hours. It doesn`t mention the voltage and the amp-hours seperately. I couldnt find the RBC 17 battery in my markets.

APC's battery replacement services are quite excellent. They know exactly what battery is required for each of their models, and will (for a reasonable cost) ship it to you with a pre-paid return mailer for the old battery so that it can be recycled. I have done this on several of my APC UPSs over the years, and it is a very simple process. Contact them (at the links other posters have provided).

Nightshade,

First issue, for UPS Battery replacement, contact the vendor or check their website (APCs is excellent) and you can't go wrong.

Second issue, when you pulled the case off to replace the battery, you possibly pulled a connector or bumped the voltage selector switch at the back of the unit.

I am assuming you checked the the original batteries before you removed them to see if they were serial or parrallel connected and then connected them the same way.

If the Battery input is now 12VDC as opposed to 24VDC or 48VDC this will case you problems too, although this would likely leave the UPS non functional it is a possibility.

If you still have issues take it to your nearest APC Service Centre and they will happily fix it for you.

Regards,
Sapper

If you observe the top of the battery you will see 6 caps for the internal vents, this would indicate 6X2=12Volts.

Something is wrong test the battery volts whilst running a faulty couple of cells would drag the output down. otherwise your ups has a problem.

Your UPS is most probably working fine.

This UPS has a modified sine wave output (stepped sine wave).

Your regular AC voltmeter is designed to show proper RMS voltage only for sine-waves at regular mains frequencies. That is why you are getting what appears to be a low reading.

Plug an incandescent lamp into your UPS output to see if it illuminates as brightly as it would directly to mains.

Most small UPS are like this.

Wal

You have a very valid point here. How ever i plugged the UPS to a 22W flourescent light and it did not operate. Will run some checks again when i get home from office.

Thanks

Hmm. Reactive load perhaps? Some induction motors don't take kindly to modified sin wave... never noticed fluoro lethargy though....

My UPSs are all online true sin wave units so can't confirm. Anyone else?
