Inductor for Hardening Small Slot

07/05/2012 11:25 PM

shifter fork hardening coil design for hardening square slot of 3 sides having dimensions 14 mm width and 12 mm deep in a forged steel section of 5 mm thickness.Problem is that the part is getting through hardened and there is no place to accomodate return loop of inductor , while hardening 2 sides viz. 12 x 5 mm sections only, 14 x 5 mm section need not be hardened.

Does it matter if the 14x5 gets hardened as well? ie heat it all.

You could selectively quench the 12x5s.

I'm thinking two coils....but I don't have a picture to see exactly what is either side of the slot.

Any chance of a picture Ravi?

dear sir,

thank you for the suggestion, the area to be hardened is as if a three sided slot is cut in a plate of 5mm thickness, each side being perpendiculat to the other.

the problem is we dont even get suffecient heating at the right angle portion of slot, since the open areas of slot get heated up more rapidly ,due to mass difference.

Post a sketch so we have something to work with please.

Can you attach a mass to the open ends to act as a heat sink during the RF excitation? Direct a stream of air perhaps....
