Wipe On Coating for Aluminium Corrosion Protection

07/12/2012 8:34 AM

Does anyone know of a food-safe coating that can be used to prevent corrosion forming on polished aluminium ?

Application is polished aluminum commercial kitchen appliances

Prefer something non toxic that can be wiped or sprayed on to the surface

Thanks people. :)

Nothing's going to stick to polished aluminum.

Do you want a clear coating?

Are you sure those appliances are not stainless steel ?

I have for many years considered aluminum an unacceptable material for cooking utensils. As a child, most of our pots and pans were aluminum, all badly pitted. I don't really know whether it is bad for you, but every aluminum cooking utensil I've seen was badly pitted after some use. Cover most any food with aluminum foil; examine it closely, and after only a couple of hours the foil has holes through it, etched by the acids in the food. Obviously the aluminum is being dissolved by the food. This can't be desirable.

Your health is worth a lot more than a set of pans. Go buy some stainless steel. I bought a set of tri-ply stainless 45 years ago. The fact that they still look good after all those years years is evidence that it is NOT being dissolved by the food.

And they work on an induction cook surface too!

thanks but it is not in contact with food , it is just the machinery housing made from cast aluminium .

You did say 'appliances' not 'utensils', but as soon as I saw 'kitchen', I thought of pots and pans... Housings are indeed different!

Thanks! You did induce me to do a bit of research... Since aluminum is the most abundant metallic element on Earth, evolution has provided us with the ability to eliminate it via the kidneys under ordinary circumstances. It appears that there is no known physiological need for it, and excess is indeed toxic in many ways, so I stand by my choice of quality stainless steels for cooking.

Since the OP is talking about housings, not food contact surfaces, these facts/ideas have little bearing on the original question.

Another long used stuff is carnauba wax, available in car supply stores. It is a wax you can buff to high shine.

Alochrom 1000 is a clear, brush coating for aluminium but I don't know if it's food safe. Its also quite fragile so not sure if it would be tough enough.

I use mineral oil (USP). It won't dry, it won't rot, it won't discolor, and it won't support bacterial growth. It is also the best thing for cutting blocks and handles for the same reasons.

There is a single pack, moisture curing, clear urethane sold everywhere in the US and here, which the makers tell us is food grade.

It's the same coating which keeps the shiny milk transport road tankers shiny.

(Lactic acid et al).

I'm satisfied that it's "hammer tough" as they say it is, as long as you don't hammer it too much, so it should be 'just the ticket' for your kitchen machinery. It'll be a mission to get it off should you need to refinish the surfaces, as there are no solvents listed for it.

The factory stated application plan will have the coating go over highly polished finishes and stay there, BUT, you have to do it 'by the book'.

Reticent to do their advertising here but if you get to by message I'll give you the info on this stuff.

Stu.

From experience in military packaging, when you have the proper moisture barrier materials, you can extend the lifespan of valuable equipment. It's important to be pre-emptive when it comes to corrosion prevention or else you could wind up spending a lot more than you'd like.

I'm not sure if this company carries what you are looking for but you can review their website: http://www.protectivepackaging.net/
