Silicone-like Material

07/10/2012 2:58 AM

Hi, I am looking for a material sort of similar to silicone sealants, its properties should be:

  • low chemical reactivity
  • non-toxic & skin safe - does not stick to skin-water-oil
  • thermal stability (-30-100 celcius centigrate)
  • hydrophobe (or at least repelling water)
  • Not soluble in oil
  • Does not support microbiological growth
  • similar in terms of softness to silicone sealants
  • durable (does not decay)

Any suggestions?

Latex caulk is probably closest to these properties but I wouldn't consider it non toxic. If you tell us the application it might be easier than guessing.

What is the application?

Does it need to be a liquid or can you use sheets or rods of material (such as a gasket)?

Can you supply more information please.

What property does silicone have that makes it unsuitable for the task?

Have you looked at specialty silicon sealants (they come in more than one variety, and one should be both suitable and economical for your needs)?

The closest thing that you will get to this is silicone sealant.

Silicone sealant is an excellent material choice where the properties of silicone sealant are desired.

There is a product in my part of the world known as 'builders mastic'.

This is a non-hardening sealer used a lot in roofing applications, sealing around window frames etc..and is considerably cheaper than silicon sealant. I've only ever seen it grey in colour, and packaged sometimes in a cellophane / plastic tube rather than the usual plunger-nozzle dispenser , so I assume it does not 'set'.

I think we have another case of OP disappearance (OPD) - seems to be highly contagious lately.
