Blind Flange Thickness for Hydrotest

07/13/2012 6:36 AM

We are going to do a hydro test of 72" line with test pressure of 7.5 bar. What should be a required thickness of blind flange?

Check out the Texas Flange web site, www.texasflange.com

They have a very good catalog you can download that will give you the information needed to answer your question, I find flange specifications for most every type ranging from .500 to 144".

Better to give a man a net then a fish, I hope this helps you somewhat.

2" thick. But you shouldn't trust a random guy on the internet.

ASME B31.3 has a blank calculation that will give you the thickness. Or there's another standard that has blind flange thicknesses (maybe called blanks) but I can't remember the name of it right now.

If these don't cover 72" pipe then do a plate stress calculation like I did. That requires FEA or Roark's Stress book.

I get 2.5" thickness for the blind.

Contact me if there are any questions

I hate being wrong, so which calculation did you use? And what stress did you use (I used yield)?

I went back and checked with B31.3 blank calculation and got 2.3" required thickness with allowable stress (so I can see using 2.5").

This is exactly why you shouldn't trust someone on the internet. I took all of 3 minutes to do my calculation the first time based on an old spreadsheet that I had.
