Using Elbolets

07/14/2012 5:16 AM

Dear Sir,

Our client would like to install a elbolet at a 90 degrees long radius elbow, but our client is saying that if we do this, the elbow will not comply to B16.9 anymore and thus will become an unlisted component as per B31.3. If I use an elbolet from bonney forge, can I just ask bonney forge for any FEA or design calculations they did during the design of their elbolet and use it to make the component B31.3 compliant?

Thank you kind Sirs.

Let me try to get this straight.

Your "Client" is telling you to do something and then tells you that what you are about to do is wrong. Is that correct?

He (the Client) must be some kind of pedantic idiot.

Both fittings are made to a specific Code and are specifically made to be assembled (welded) together in a specific manner. Assuming you are in fact assembling them in the traditional specific manner. This has been done regularly and successfully for more than fifty years that I know of and I don't remember ever doing one FEA (finite element analysis) on these.

You can ask "WFI/Bonny Forge" (now one company) for FEA data but I would guess that it is not available.

Your boss need to go and have a talk with your "Client's" boss.

By the way (a) what is the commodity? (b) what is the material? (c) what is the size of the elbow? (d) what size is the elbolet? (e) what is the wall schedule? and (f) what is the maximum operating pressure and temperature.
