WPS Thickness Range and Welding Position

In a recent WPS which we provided for a job in Finland, three possible weld positions were included and a steel plate thickness range from 6-30mm. The WPS was rejected on the grounds that the WPS does not show an exact thickness of the material, which is 12mm and only one weld position is required, not three. Can the WPS be rejected on these grounds?

I see no rational reason to reject the procedure, but whoever said that local law is rational?

Its more a question of: is he within his rights? If its not contractually defined, can he disqualify the WPS on any other grounds or standards?

Yes, correct, it has been rejected. Now its either obstruction or rewrite the procedure.

It may be obstruction. But, does it really matter? Who is paying for the product, whatever it is? The customer doesn't like what you've given them. Your being argumentative and trying to sell them a rejected document will not help you.

You really haven't given sufficient information to go on here.

Rewrite the procedure!

For 12 mm thickness, the qualified thickness range is 6.00 to 24.00 mm and only one welding position like down hand (1G), Horizontal (2G) or Vertical up (3G) - due to 12 mm thickness and like wise if you are following sec. IX of ASME.

Welding position is not an essential variable and it will not create problems in your production jobs. But, thickness of base metal can not be changed beyond 24 mm.

You can not mention 3 positions nor 30 mm thickness. Hence, You have to modify your WPS accordingly and think it will be accepted by your client.
