PDF Attachments

07/17/2012 5:55 AM

I'm fairly new to this forum. I found it to be a great online community for all Engineering related fields, yet I fail to understand why pdf attachments have not been utilized in this forum.

I see pdf sheets to be an important communication tool especially for engineering related forums, so I was a bit curious as to the reason we don't have it here. Is it pending future implementation, or what was the reason to omit the feature?

There have not been plans to accommodate file types other than images because of the potential to spread viruses. I'm not sure if viruses are easily spread by PDF or not.

Links to documents are welcome. For example you could save a document in a service like Google Documents and provide a public link to it in a forum post.

For what it's worth, if you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat, you can save the PDF as an image file, and the post that. The only problem I can see with that would be the image size, I don't think a full 8.5 x 11 sheet will be very legible if posted as an image, but it's still a possible option.

Also not everyone has a pdf maker, so its not nearly as cost effective as an image.

Depending on the document flavor, and assuming one has room on their HD, Open Office does PDF conversion pretty well and is free. In fact, that was one of the main reasons I downloaded and installed it. I have Acrobat 6.0 which takes up approx. 130 Megs of space. Open Office 3.3 takes up about 360 Megs of HD space. But then it is a suite of applications. It's one way to overcome the cost hurdle. I find it better in most cases than the free PDF printer drivers that can be used, too.

Most CAD applications can "Save As" or "Export" DXF files, which can be imported into Open Office documents. I've not used it extensively for that, but I have opened DXF files. The flavor (or simplicity) of the DXF might influence how successfully it can be done. I've found it's usually best to used the simplest form of DXF, anyway, between applications.

I just checked and OO will also import WMF, which some CAD apps. will do. Postscript is another alternative in some CAD apps., too.
