Water Pressure Pump - How to Adjust Water Pressure

07/19/2012 12:46 PM

I am staying at 2nd floor & my water tank is above my floor (it's a 2 story building), the building owner has installed PVC/plastic pipes, the ground & first floor has a proper water pressure & flow, but my house on 2nd floor has a problem about the water pressure flow. I understand it is due to the water head that is not enough as hight difference is not much.

While complaining to the owner installed a water pressure pump (some Chinese) water pressure increased but it bursted the pipe of neighbour's house & in a house on a ground floor, so again they reduce the pressure but its a problem for me since the pressure dropped. Also water shower & water heater connection joints are of small diameter & the pipes generally used are 3/4" dia. For supply all along & due to lack of diff. in hight & this dia. difference the flow & pressure is not adequate.

I tried myself changing pressure but could not succeed, as there are 2 screw with spring are there, one is longer & another is smaller, both screws are with springs & nuts, I am not very sure but those are I believe to differentiate the pressure, correct me if I am wrong, I could not see any solenoid valve/switch or something which can activate the pump on & off if the water flow start/ stops, & yes the pump is running continuously & the gauge is showing 0 currently which was showing pressure initially when installed first time before pipe burst.

I need to know what needs to be done to get enough pressure in the shower, & also other's pipes should not burst like before. There are 4 plastic 1000 ltr. each tanks installed & all are interconnected at bottom with each other so to have equal water level & supply could be offered to every flats.

Apart from adjusting the pressure in the water pressure pump if there are any other ideas i could apply (cost effective) pls. suggest accordingly.

Thanking you all in anticipation towards a solution in advance.

Thanks & regards.

you don't say where you are, that information can often be helpful to those trying to answer,

My brother lives in the UK and has a tank level with the shower, he has a small pump dedicated to the shower, he switches it on only when using the shower. I believe you must not work these directly off the supply, you need a small cistern.

Check with these people.

Or

And/or these

Most are set to 60 psi. If that was what the pressure was set at and the PVC pipes burst then it was faulty pipe or poor installation if they burst at the connections. 3/4" Schedule 40 pipe has a max working pressure of 289 psi. A burst rating of 1540 PSI.

You should not be trying to correct the problem your landlord should. If you tamper with it and there is another burst pipe. You could be held liable for the damages.

Seek help from your local government housing dept.

I would think the pump should have been installed only on your water feed and not to the downstairs neighbors if they already had sufficient pressure.

I keep a pressure gauge on a short garden hose. Connect to the washer hookup or you can get an adapter for faucets to garden hose. Get an accurate measure of your pressure. Check for filters, if you have one, it may need changing.

Anything over 25 psi should give you good flow. If you have good pressure and poor flow, you have a blockage somewhere. It will take a professional to find that.

The only solution that would work for you well without affecting others is to install one jumpover on the terrace in the supply line from top tank to your house and put here, one small online booster that is available for 30psig and wire it with a switch at your your house. You may operate whenever you need higher pressure.

Hope this small work would solve your problem,

Please check your pipes are not blocked.

If there is build up within your pipes this will reduce the pressure you get at the point of use.

It is common for old pipes to corrode from within, causing the water flow to become difficult. Eventually they block up completely.

Might not be a pressure problem at all.

Hope this helps,

Anthony

I believe they are PVC pipes.

What is needed is a pressure regulator at each floor level.Changing the pump pressure will not achieve the desired results. The regulator should be installed at each apartment supply entrance.A regulator adjusts the output according to demand to maintain a steady pressure. It cannot boost pressure beyond the supply pressure, it can only reduce it to a steady level.Adjust the cut-in pressure of the pump slightly higher than the desired regulator setting. The two screws on the pressure switch have different functions:One of them adjusts the cut out pressure. The other one adjusts the differential between cut-in(on) and cut-out(off) pressure. The switch cover will indicate which function each screw controls. For instance, if you want a maximum pressure of 60 psi,and a minimum of 50 psi, adjust the cut-out to turn off at 60 psi. Then adjust the cut-in to turn on at 50 psi.

Then adjust all regulators to 40 psi.The pipe sizes seem adequate.

Note:

Water pressure due to height is .433psi per foot of height. So estimating 30 foot height to top of water in tank, there is approximately 13 PSI difference between ground level and top of tank water level.

The gauge is probably bad due to vibration from the pump.Replace it with a glycerin-filled switch, which will absorb the pump vibration and give long service life.

Good Luck!

You do not own the water supply pipes, valves, storage tanks and the obviously incorrectly installed booster pump in your building, much less in your apartment! Your building landlord owns it all, and if you start monkeying around with any of them, then you will be held accountable for any and all damages resulting from you actions. You may also be evicted by the landlord if you begin working on solving the water pressure and flow problems.

What is your landlord's take on this matter? Whay have they siad to you and otehrs in your building?

Tell him/her to either fix the problem or you will report him/her to the local building code enforcement dept. or other regulatory agency having jurisdiction. Give him/her a specified maximum time period in order to correct the deficiencies, or else.

Also, the landlord needs to hire a licensed plumber who knows what they are doing so as to correct the problems. The landlord is probably a DIYer that doesn't know how to properly install plumbing.....obviously this is the case because so far they have demonstrated they don't know to do this, based on what you have told us so far w/ all of the missteps and errors!

In the event that the landlord refuses to fix the deficiencies or doesn't hire a licensed plumber, you always have the option to move out and find a better apartment and landlord who is more responsible & responsive!

a booster punp with a regulator should fix the problem. the piping system should be taken into account when setting the regulator pressure.

i am currently living in one of the best place on this earth???!!!! NIGERIA, LAGOS, where no logic works really, you need to manage everything on your own, no one is responsible for any shortfall or bad quality because everything is fine whether it is good or bad, you are on your own, so if you complain you are fool & wasting your time, anyways some of you will surely agree with me who knows about Ng. hence, i have asked you all to help, cheers,

Thanks for the update. If you are really on your own, and are allowed to improve your apartment without violating the lease, there are some things you can do.

First I would put a check valve on the line coming into the apartment, and then a pressure tank. Whatever water and pressure that enters your pipes will not return back to the system, even if it totally fails. This will also keep your water meter measuring only what you use. Most meters don't read in reverse, so if the pressure comes and goes, you could be paying for a gallon twice or more.

This may be enough. Whenever the system is up, your tank fills, and holds pressure for you only. When the system comes back after a low pressure problem, your tank fills again. Sweet, no motors, no electricity used.

If things are really bad, have the tank installed high enough so you could drain it into a pan when the pressure is almost gone.

1. Can you raise the tank height

2. Use of a pump cannot be continuous I guess , if you have used one, have a by pass line installed on the pump discharge with a valve to put the water back to the tank .

Control the bypass flow to control the pressure in your floor. Water grade PVC pipes are strong and should not burst, it could be the joints which is leaking

i have'nt the time to read all the threads. sorry if i stepped on someones toes.

i would install a booster pump going to a pressure tank on your floor. install a check valve so the boosted pressure does'nt interfer with your neighbors plumbing.
