NN100 Fire Suppression System Equipment Room Size

07/22/2012 1:44 AM

Good day to everyone,

We have a new substation building design measuring 24.0m x 93.5m. The new S/S building is designed for 2-11KV Switchgear room, low voltage switchgear room, battery room, generator room, and ENMC room.

Based on the outline dimension of the substation building (24.0m x 93.5m) and equipment installed, could anyone give me some information on what approximate dimension do I need to allocate for NN100 Fire Suppression System which will be housed adjacent to S/S building.

Would appreciate if someone could give me some idea on how could I derive or get the figure.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance.

Best regards,

Alfredo_Jr.

Ask the NN100 Fire Suppression System company.

Who would know better than the people who make and sell the systems?

Why ask total strangers?

All the basic info you require to do a basic calculation, is to be found here:

http://www.koatsu.co.jp/img/pdf/nn100_package_e.pdf

Be aware though, that there are two types of calculation ...one in which you do not allow for the volume of the equipment in the protected void, and the other in which you do. The system designer can tell you which one is provided for....

NB. Do not protect a manned space with nitrogen, as it is an asphyxiant gas.

This product's probable principle-of-operation is to reduce the amount of oxygen available for combustion in the protected void (typically below 14%).

Thank you very much for your kind reply. I have checked the web site and as well manage to get some technical information with regards to "Design Concentration = 40.3 % by volume" and "Agent quantity requirement = 0.52 cu. m/cu.m". With this information, and checking on the physical size of the cylinder, an approximate figure for the physical dimension of the room, I think, can be derived.

Is someone requiring you to use this agent ?

Here are some unfortunate facts regarding a Nitrogen suppression system:

1. The bottles are expensive because they must contain over 2000 psi.

2. Since the agent is not compressed to a liquid, many more bottles must be used than similar systems.

3. The piping system will not withstand the pressure associated with the discharge of nitrogen, therefore pressure reducing equipment must be employed.

4. The system must be VERY carefully calculated with regard to quantity discharged if people are present. If the system must be people safe, ALL equipment in the protected area that takes up volume must be included in a "material volume reduction calculation". Otherwise, the nitrogen concentration may reduce available oxygen to a point where ...well you get the point.

Why not use FM-200 or NOVEC 1230 ?

They are both stored as a liquid (much fewer bottles, maybe just 1), operate at 360 psi (no pipe system pressure issues), are completely people safe.

Just a little food for thought.

Thank you very much for all this additional technical information.

Actually, we are doing FEED and the client specifically requires NN100.

Do you want to know what size footprint the fire suppression system will occupy?

I feel that it will be better to ask the company for the same. They would have experts for that who can tell you better about the approximate and appropriate dimension and in case, you start facing problem regarding it in the future, you can recall them.
