Solar Panel System

07/30/2012 12:59 PM

I have two solar panels 75 watt and connect both in parallel and connect directly to a battery of 12 volt and 80 ah (to charge the battery) with inverter's +ve -ve terminals wire. I charge the battery everyday and while charging I use it to watch tv, laptops, mobile charging and at night for house lights. Is there any problem with my rules? can anybody tell me?

If I read your post correctly you have connected your solar system without using a solar regulator or inverter.

It is HIGHLY advisable to connect the solar panels and the battery through a solar regulator rather than just connecting the solar panels to the battery. This is because the solar panel output voltage varies with sunlight and this varying voltage can damage the battery.

The point of a solar regulator is to protect and charge the battery correctly. Your system will work for a while but will likely reduce the life expectancy of the battery.

I would strongly suggest getting a solar regulator as the cost of a new 12V 80Ah battery is much greater than that of a new solar regulator.

If however I have misread your post and you are using a solar regulator or inverter and are just wondering about how to best use your solar system (and extend the battery life) while the solar panels are charging the battery, then what you have mentioned is generally fine as most solar regulators or inverters charge up and protect the battery during normal usage while the solar panels charge up the battery and excess solar power is used to power the loads connected up to the solar regulator or inverter and only discharge the battery if there is not enough sun or the load becomes to great for the solar panels.

More information can be found in your solar regulator or inverter manual or off the suppliers website.

Thanks for the advise, ofcourse I connect inverter to battery only to convert dc to ac. May i know the types of regulator and their prizes. Is it possible to take out current from the inverter while charging with regulator during day sunny time. Or regulator and inverter are the same device :)

Generally the solar inverter provides the same benefits as the solar regulator with the added advantage of converting the DC voltage into single phase AC.

If however you are talking about a standard DC to single phase power inverter that only has two terminals for the 12V DC in and two or three terminals for the single phase AC out then this will provide none of the benefits of the solar regulator.

For more general information try an internet search of "solar regulator" and "solar inverter".

Additionally below is a link to example standard (and relatively inexpensive) solar regulators I have been talking about (which this particular manufacturer calls "charge controllers"), specifically the SunSaver.

Link

There are many brands and suppliers of these types of basic solar regulators so it shouldn't be difficult to find them locally.
