1. Turn off Caps Lock.

2. Explain the context.

The cone-beam CT (CBCT) is a very useful imaging examination for the type of problem that you are describing. The technology is relatively new: the first machine, the NewTom, was introduced into the United States only about five or six years ago, and since then there have been a few other machines produced by other companies. All of the CBCT machines would provide a high-quality image that should provide the surgeon with the desired information. The typical image presentations for these machines are views in the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes, with other views possible with secondary reconstruction of the data.

The biggest problem you may have is finding someone who has this equipment. If you live in California, you are probably in luck because there are a number of free-standing imaging laboratories that have one of the CBCT machines. Many dental schools also have them. For example, at the University of Michigan we have the I-CAT CBCT (Imaging Sciences International). Other CBCT machines currently being marketed in the United States include the MercuRay (Hitachi Medical Systems) and the 3D Accuitomo (J. Morita Corp).

If you have trouble finding a facility that has the equipment, you might contact the companies and ask them where they have placed their machines. For example, Imaging Sciences has sold about 100 units. I don't know how many of the others have been sold to date, but they are relatively new in this country.

If you cannot find a CBCT near you, the same information can be obtained with a conventional CT scanner. The resolution of modern machines is perfectly adequate to show the relationship of the mandibular nerve and the third molar root, although the radiation dose for the conventional CT is generally higher than for the CBCT.

If you use three or four normal CTs for earth fault protection, then the error could be more as there are 3 or 4 CT cores that can have their own errors. Whereas a CBCT has a single core and only this single core's error would affect the relay performance. Hence, CBCTs are said to be more sensitive.

And, yes! because of the special toroidal core design CBCTs are costly when compared to normal CTs.
