Welding Technique for High Temperature High Pressure Pipe

08/13/2012 4:31 AM

Which welding technique should be used for high temperature (500 deg celsius) and high pressure(200 bar) steam pipe line?

Can Nicro 82 electrodes be used as filler material in GTAW of such (high pressure and high temp) Pipe line. or any other technique is useful for that.

Somewhere, there will be a company providing burst indemnity insurance for the facility. Open a dialogue with the company to discuss acceptable practice in detail, for it's not just the welding that is important - acceptable documentation of that process is needed too. Some useful tips will be picked up along the way, such as reference to acceptable standards, techniques and materials.

At the day of reckoning, it will be the company's Engineer/Surveyor that will endorse the facility for insurance cover. These people have seen it all before and will know exactly what constitutes an insurable installation. So get on the phone. Right now.

The facility will have a Piping Specification for this particular fluid, temperature and pressure. What does it say?

Your question defies an answer.

You give no useful information.

The implication of the preceeding posts is that you obviously are not qualified to specify welding proceedures, and if you try to do this, the pipeline will shurly explode and kill people.

Hire a qualified welding consultant. The life you save might just be your own!!!

You have not received an answer to your question because the knowledgeable people who have responded assume that you are proposing to specify an ad hoc weld procedure. In their world, this is not possible. Here's how it works:

The successful mechanical Contractor is bound by the conditions of Contract to be a member of the National (whatever Nation you are in) Welding Bureau.

As a member of the National Welding Bureau, the Contractor will have on staff (or on retainer) a certified Welding Engineer. (Contractor will also have on site a certified Welding Superintendant.) As a member of the Bureau, the Contractor will have a book of pre-qualified welds. (If the required weld is not in the book, he will have to make application to the Bureau to include it.) One cannot, responsibly, invent one's own procedure - at least, not and remain insured.

The Weld Procedure Data Sheet will set forth all of the information relevant to the particular weld - all of it - including the answers to your question.

Given the steam conditions that you mention, a deviation from this procedure will be viewed with alarm by people experienced in this matter.

Google up "Weld Procedure Data Sheet".
