Gas Station Pump Bases

08/13/2012 12:33 PM

Good morning all... Have been asked by a customer about making pre cast concrete bases for gas pump bases at a service station. Anyone point me in the direction of a typical drawing for one?

Gilbarco (not an endorsement) might help you. I'm not sure all brands are of the same design, so find out who makes them first.

A simple web search will give you plenty of sources. How to Search the Internet

I've never come across a precast concrete base to support gas pumps, and I've done a lot of service station site designs over the years. No, I've never seen a fabrication or construction drawing that featured precast concrete gas pump bases.

Usually the bases consist of a painted galvanized steel perimeter ring and cast-in-place concrete. Not all dispensing pump hardware is equal due to variations of piping and electrical layouts from one manufacturer to the next.

You should contact the gas pump manufacturer to inquire about their base requirements + the federal, state and local code requirements.

I agree with the Capt here. I've never seen one allowed.

One primary function of the pump base is to protect the fuel and electrical piping in the event of vehicle strike. Were these bases precast components that are pinned to the on grade slab, a sufficient impact would almost certainly shear any stay pins and the piping as well. A proper fuel pump base will elevate and exceed the footprint of the pump enough to ensure (in all but the most extreme circumstances) that the base is impacted and not the pump.

And don't forget the requirement of installing steel pipe ballards (Inverted U-shape) at each end of the pump base to protect the gas pumps......
