VA Claims Backlog "Could Compromise a Building"

08/17/2012 10:47 PM

The files backlog, stacked on full filing cabinets, exceeded the floor design load by 39 pounds per square foot. Rachel Maddow featured this on her show tonight. There is a backlog of a million claims, and if you only filed in the last four months, yours is not included in the million.

I don't know the design load, depending on when it was built and whether it was designed as an office or warehouse, it could be anywhere from 40 to 150psf.

Sounds like someone needs a bulk paper scanner and supply of Terabyte hard drives.

Paper records should never be stored in this manner.

The problem is scale, they, the VA, were not built for the present level of work. They have been talking about scanning.

For that purpose are they planning to use some of the 30,000 surveillance drones to be deployed over U.S. soil by 2015?

Well...all of that drama for nothing...that Rachel Maddow, what a kidder. Who would've thought she would over-dramatize a l'il ole government office's storage problem through the public media?

The report was released with all pertinent data contained within:

Floor load design was 125 pounds

Actual floor load was 120 pounds

Now, this does not account for the engineering for a number of people actually using the building, i.e., a working load.

The problems discovered in May (as reported) were eliminated within a month of the initial visit (June 18th).

That's pretty fast for a gov't facility!

p.s., what types of claims are these, anyway...education, medical, mortgage? All of the above?
