Ultrasonic Flow Transmitter

08/15/2012 12:17 AM

Hi!

We must use an ultrasonic flow transmitter to measuring flow of a 1800 DN water line which is equipped with Cathodic Protection System. Since location of installation of the transmitter is a part of this protection system i want to know dose affect a cathodic protection system and its related electric current, function of ultrasonic flow transmitter?

BR!

No, though the reason why an ultrasonic flowmeter would be used for cathodic protection, and not a sactificial electrode of lower value and no other function, is abstruse.

this flow meter measures only the water flow and cathodic protection system dose its task independently.

NO problem with the CP system installed. This flowmeter sensor will send and receive only ultrasonic signals it will not be affected by the cathodic protection system, but measures the flow.

I had this problem in Barcelona many years ago, where two pipes with different CP installations were in proximity (separate Owners). There is one aspect that may be worth consideration. If the body of the flowmeter is connected to the return side of its electronic circuit and the latter is not connected to the pipe itself, a parasitic current may flow, diverting some of the cathodic protection current.

Two solutions are (i) ensuring electrical isolation (floating) of the circuitry of the flowmeter and its external connections or (ii) ensuring that the return sides of the cathodic protection and the flowmeter are electrically tied together. Personally, I prefer the isolation, if the flowmeter design permits it.
