Tolerance and Allowance for the Inch System

I need the tolerances and allowances table for the inch system. Does it equivalent to the metric system. If it is different, what is the diference? Can any provide this table to me?

Tolerances and allowances for the inch or metric system covers a wide array of measurements taken in all different types of industries. You will need to define what industry first.

A "tolerance" is a description of error acceptability. The tables you seek will come from specific industry or manufacturing guidelines. Tolerance varies widely based on what is being investigated.

For instance, the tolerance for a turbine blade will be tighter than the tolerance for a street sign.

These acceptable tolerances can then be measured using the "inch system" or the metric system.

It all depends on what you are doing. The tolerances for a machinist to fabricate a SAE torque wrench will be different than the tolerances a carpenter uses to frame a wall.

Sorry for the wrong terminology. It should have been "fits" not tolerances.

If you are looking for fits such as H7, g3 etc. we just use the mertic charts and convert them to inches using our good old 25.4

I agree with redfred; it still depends.

If you are, for a random example, fitting precious stones into a silver ring the fit would need to be very accurate. If you are, in another example selected at random, fitting a steel door into a steel frame there will be a little bit more forgiveness in the fit.

Can you tell us what you are doing?

I can hardly consider the fitting of a precious stone into a silver ring as an example of a need for high accuracy. If the space for the stone is 0.020" too large, no big deal, you just bend the prongs over an extra 0.010" on each side. Have a space 0.020" too large for the ball in a small ball bearing, and you've got trouble! There are LOTS of other examples that could be considered...
