Fiber optic interface with assorted block plastics

05/17/2007 9:59 AM

I am interested in interfacing fiberoptic cable with a block of plexiglass (or other plastics) in order to transmit an image via (say cctv or digital video) through the cable into the plexiglass block. I am having trouble finding out (a) if this has been done before and (b) if not, how to get the specs correctly. I am a mathematical physicist so the mathematics and the physics is not the problem, it's the engineering that's killing me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will do Bill. But it appears that the dialogue has taken a left turn into insanity. I have reported the two posters. I have the feeling that I will get no responses.

I don't know if this has been tried but I would imagine that you would need to expand the image from the fibre bundle using a fibre optic taper. Someone like Edmunds Optics would stock a range of tapers.

Try here http://www.edmundoptics.com/onlinecatalog/displayproduct.cfm?productID=1599&search=1 These are an 'off the shelf' supplier who have a limited range of tapers. Other suppliers like http://www.incomusa.com/ or http://www.schott.com/uk/english/index.html will make custom shapes but will be expensive & have long lead times. If you are just experimenting it's always worth begging to see if they have any rejects that they might give away.
