Roof Top Pipe Support Help

05/17/2007 11:11 AM

I manufacture a pipe support for commercial rooftops. This product replaces a wood block 4x4 sometimes called a sleeper. My dilemma is the mechanical contractor and the roofer try to get the other person to be in charge of pipe supports on the roof. Generally the practice is to use wood blocks. The is a bad practice because wood blocks are not designed to allow for thermal expansion, water or UV. A great deal

of repair work is because the wood block has moved back and forth over time which wear the roof down.

Any Suggestions on how to solve this catch 22

Thank You

Tom

We have similar problems where several parties each hope the other will take responsibility.

If your product is a joy to install then try to sell it to all concerned, maybe even the pipe stockists?

If it saves time they will buy it.

If it only saves maintenance 3 years down the line, then , sadly, they probably won't.

I think time is the key, we found a quick way for installers mount a chemical injection point onto plastic waste pipes, (for enzyme drain product dosing) they love it.

It's just an accesory, so we won't get rich, but it makes the rest of our system more attractive.

Good luck.

I've seen a lot of rotted wooden sleepers in my days of rooftop unit replacement, but have never really seen for myself a block that moved enough to wear a hole in a roof.

Heavier pipes are using a better grade of pipe supports, such as the kind with beveled rollers for thermal expansion.

HVAC contractors are typically working under lowest bidder constraints and a better gas pipe support isn't cost effective vs. a quick chop on a scrap piece of 4x4, ( knowing full well it will not last too many years.)

My suggestion is to market these pipe stands to engineering firms so that they SPECIFY this up-graded pipe support. Don't look for us hungry contractors to bid in the price for these things.
