Fiberoptics Connection

05/17/2007 7:34 PM

Hi, I'm trying to figure out if I can have a fiber optic cable can be attached to a cone shape prism to magnify the image. I figure that it will need a optical oil between, and it would not be the absolute best view but is it feasable. Also if the fibers on the distal end were spread out/ splayed out to cover more area would the image be degraded-or is this even possible-thanks

For sure the light coming out from the optical fiber will be spread out and the image will be degraded.

Are you trying to use fiber-optics to get an image from someplace that's hard to reach? Are you just trying to move an image from one place to another? If yes, that's an easy matter.

its me again, what I need to do is get a -not perfect-view of an area thats about 4x4cm at 2-4cm distance. I want to put the fiberoptics on a part that will stay in place but have the light source and viewing lens-or what ever it turn out to be-be disconnected. I understand to use an optical oil between the fibers and the lens-but does a simple cone shape or multiple cone shaped lens work to magnify?

the other question was about spreding the fibers out, does that increase the area covered but degrade the quality?

thanks

It sounds like you're getting way more complicated than you need to. Try looking in the Edmund Optics catalog. They specialize in machine/industrial imaging.

No. A fiber doesn't transmit an image, it merely guides light. A coherent bundle of fibers, where they are bundled in the same order at each end, can transmit a pixellated image (see boroscope). This image is generally expanded for viewing using a lens.
