Use of Diesel Engine Driven Tractor for Classified Area (Zone-2, IIB, T3)

09/17/2012 12:59 AM

Dear All,

I would like to consider Diesel engine driven Tractor to handle/carry TEAL trolly in classified area (Zone 2, IIB, T3).

To make Tractor suitable for classified area, I like to consider SPARK ARRESTER in exhaust of the engine.

Please provide your remarks.

In case, if you any reference available please share.

Regards,

Nilesh

Big zone 2s, are they? Process material containment problem, is there?

Hazardous area leading to ignition/explosion, hence all chances of spark have to be eliminated in these areas.

Dear Mr. Joshi,

Thanks for your input.

I want to use Tractor in classified area. Do you have any experience to use Tractor (with Spark arrester) in Classified area.

Could you please provide reference list or suggest Manufacturer / dealer who has supplied Tractor in classified area.

Lorry/truck reference in classified area is also acceptable.

Such as tractor engine exhaust manifolds, starter motors and starter batteries, perhaps? The spark arrestor is the least of the OP's problems, by the sound of it!

Many years ago I supplied some diesel engine-driven pumps for Zone 2. Special exhausts, spark-arrestors and a few other bits, but it was not at all involved or complicated as a job. I think the engines were Lister-Petter, but we received them already certified for zone 2 operation. However, I have never seen or heard of tractors suitable for operation in zone 2.

You could check out some tractor manufacturers/suppliers first, just in case they do a suitable tractor, or conversion kit.

You could contact a manufacturer of ATEX certified diesel engines to see if they can help.

You should also check with your certifying authority to see if it possible to have a tractor certified for Zone 2, and if so, what is involved.

You could contact one of the many companies that specialize in ATEX/Flameproof equipment and installations of all sorts.

Agreed, it is generally not possible to modify an existing tractor or vehicle for hazardous areas (unless the inspector is incompetent or being bribed - both being bad).

I don't know about the Indian standards (have you checked Nilesh?) but you will likely need to buy a hazardous area certified vehicle.

What do your standards say regarding the subject Nilesh?

I fully agree with your suggestion of installing spark arrestor at the engine exhaust to make the movement of trator safe in Zone 2
