Looking for Online Design Software

09/28/2012 10:08 AM

a couple of years back I was using a downloadable package with which one could produce designs for one-off manufacturing. The online user would produce a drawing and submit it, receiving a quote for the production of that designed element or item.

my memory tells me that they were an advertiser on CR4.

Does anyone know the name of the site? I need to have some things made.

This marketing concept has really mushroomed in the past couple of years, especially with the advent of interest in 3D printing technologies.

You need to be a bit more specific as to what sort of things you want to have manufactured. Metal parts (i.e., traditional lathe/mill work), prototype or finished goods, maybe PCB's? I also suspect there are a number of outfits out there that have figured out how to scam this marketing approach...

Some of the main CAD houses now are offering web-based design services- AutoCAD for one, where you submit a bunch of photos and they produce a *.stl file suitable for 3D printing. I have had people send me Google Sketchup drawings from which they would like to have parts printed (no, I do not endorse Google Sketchup for this sort of thing- the resulting *.stl files are generally not suitable, and have to be redrawn from scratch).

Depending on how complicated the parts are, you may be able to produce an acceptable design using any number of Open Source or otherwise free CAD packages (see a summary I put together a while back- note it is dated, but a good place to start).
