our traction geared passenger elevator has a toggle on-off switch labeled as fireman switch.what is its function and why is this on-off toggle switch enclosed in a screwed glass fixture.
It is most likely an incorrect update to an older passenger elevator, enabling one of the two most common Fire Service modes of operation. This will depend on the location of this elevator.
Fire Service mode, in general, enables the elevator to move after it has been recalled to its fire recall floor. This is NOT a way for people to evacuate a building, you should use the stairs!
The glass front can be fairly easily broken out for use (frangible cover), while reducing tampering by casual tinkerers and curious children.
Doorman has it correct.
The newer ones are a Key Switch, and the local Fire Departments are the only ones with the keys.
Toggle switches have not been allowed for years.
